Computer Terminology / Glossary:-
There are many technical terms in computer and mobile which are very important to know, this vocabulary is very big. Let us know about some technical terms.
1) Applications:- Application is also called program. Those who use the platform to perform tasks.
2) Bit:- Bit is the smallest unit of information that a computer can carry. A bit can only take one of two values, 0 or 1.
3) Byte:- A byte is a combination of eight bits arranged in a sequence.
4) Camcorder:- It is a digital video camera used to record videos.
5) Compact Disk (CD):- It is a storage device used to store data in digital format.
6) Central Processing Unit (CPU):- The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the primary hardware device that understands and executes the commands you give to the computer.
7) Commands:- A command is an instruction, which you give to a computer, our computer works according to the commands given by the user.
8) Communication Channel: A communication channel is a path or a link that connects computers or other devices, such as printers and disk drives, to transfer information.
9) CPU speed:- CPU speed is the rate at which the CPU can perform tasks, such as moving data from RAM, or performing numerical calculations.
10) Data:- Data is the plural for Latin word datam, which means an item of information.
11) Data base program:- Database programs are used to store and manage data in an organized manner. You can also use these programs to sort or search the information stored in the database.
12) Desktop:- Desktop is an on-screen work area that uses a combination of menus and icons.
13) Desktop Computer:- Desktop computer monitors are made up of individual components such as the keyboard system unit and printer.
14) Digital Camera:- A camera that stores images in digital form on a memory device, such as a flash memory card or a mini hard disk.
15) Digital Versatle Disc (DVD):- It is a storage device used to store data in digital format.
16) Folder:- A folder is a container for programs and files in the GUI interface.
17) Gigabyte:- One gigabyte (GB) is equal to 1,024 mb, which is approximately equal to one billion bytes.
18) Graphical User Interface (GUI):- A Graphical User Interface (GUI) displays images and pictures that allow the computer user to interact easily with the computer.
19) Graphics program:- Graphics programs are used to create and edit images. You can also use these programs to edit photos.
20) Hardware:- Hardware refers to all the physical components of the computer.
21) Home Office:- An arrangement that allows people to work from home.
22) Icon:- An icon displays a small image on the screen to represent the object.
23) Input device:- An input device is used to provide information to a computer. Keyboard is an example of an input device.
24) Intranet:- A special type of network used for communication and sharing of information within an organization.
25) Kilobyte: - A kilobyte (kb) is equal to 1,024 bytes.
26) Laptop computer:- Laptop computer is a lightweight and portable personal computer. Laptop computers are also called notebook computers.
27) Local area network (LAN):- A LAN connects devices within a limited area, such as a home or a small group of offices.
28) Megabyte:- One Megabyte (mb) is equal to 1,024 kb.
29) Menu:- A menu is a list of options from which the user can choose an option to perform a desired action.
30) Mobile phone:- A wireless device that has the capability of a traditional wired phone and allows you to make calls from almost any location.
31) MPEG:- Audio Layer 3 (MP3) is a format developed by the Motion Picture Experts Group to allow compression of audio and video for digital distribution.
32) Network:- A network is a group of computers that are connected to share resources and information.
33) Network drive:- A network drive is a disk drive that is shared with other computers on the network.
34) Online:- When the computer is connected to the internet, it is said to be online.
35) Operating System:- The operating system controls the hardware of the computer and provides the programs with services and access to the hardware. It also manages computer operations and functions, such as logging on, logging in, and shutting down.
36) Platform :- Hardware and Operating System is known as a Platform.
37) Personal digital assistant (PDA):- A handheld computer used as a personal organizer. A PDA includes features such as an address book, task list, and calculator.
38) Pixel:- Shows the smaller units that make up a picture. The higher the number of pixels, the better the picture quality.
39) Presentation Programs:- Presentation Programs are used to present information in the form of slides.
40) Processing Devices:- Processing devices:- are used by the computer user to process the input data and generate the desired output.
41) Programs:- A program is a sequence of instructions that can be executed by a computer. Also known as a programe software.
42) Publishing Programs:- Publishing programs are used to create documents like brochures, greeting cards, annual reports, books or magazines with the help of text and graphics.
43) Resolution:- Refers to the clarity and sharpness of a picture.
44) Server:- Server is the main computer on the network that provides services to other computers on the network. A server decides which computers are allowed to access the hardware and software on the network.
45) Setup wizard:- Setup wizards are provided by Windows Vista. They guide the user through each step of a particular task, such as installing hardware or software.
46) Software :- Software is a sequence of instructions that a computer can execute. It is also known as program.
47) Spreedsheet program:- Spreadsheet programs are used to create budgets, manage accounts, perform mathematical calculations, and convert numerical data into charts and graphs.
48) Storage Devices:- Storage devices are devices used to store data. A hard disk is an example of a storage device.
49) System Unit:- A system unit refers to the box which contains the processor, motherboard disk drive, power supply and expansion bus.
50) Tablet Computer:- Tablet computers are computers that allow you to write directly on the screen using a tablet pen.
51) Taskbar:- Taskbar is a rectangular bar which is usually located at the bottom of the screen. You can use the taskbar to select the programs that are running on your computer.
52) Terabyte:- One terabyte is equal to 1024 GB, which is approximately equal to trillion bytes.
53) Wallpaper:- Wallpaper is a pattern or picture on the screen background that you can choose.
54) Wide area network WAN:- A network is a network that connects devices in geographically separated areas. It is used to exchange information around the world.
55) Window:- In Windows Vista, a window is a rectangular area on the monitor that displays a program. Each program has its own window.
56) Word processing system:- Word processing programs are used to create and modify text-based documents.
57) Workstation:- A workstation refers to a computer connected to the network. You use workstations to access hardware and software over the network.
58) Access Point:- An access point is a wireless connection device. It is used to connect wireless computing devices to a wired network.
59) Add-ons:- Add-ons are programs that help you view files like animation, audio or video included in web pages.
60) Backup:- It is used to create duplicate copies of a program, disk or data.
61) Cache Memory:- Temporary memory on your computer that is sometimes used to store local copies of files opened while browsing the Internet.
62) Chat program:- Chat programs allow you to send and receive messages instantly. You can use the chat program to chat with multiple people at the same time.
63) Computer Privacy:- Holding user data, including personal files and e-mail messages, that cannot be accessed by anyone without proper permission.
64) Computer Security:- Protects a computer system and its data from intentional loss and tampering.
65) Cookies:- This is a small file on the computer that is created when the user visits the website. A website uses cookies to identify the user who visits the site, and also tracks the user's preferences.
66) Copyright:- It is a way of protecting the rights to a creative work, such as a text, music, painting or computer program, through legislation.
67) E-commerce:- E-commerce refers to the business transactions done over the Internet, such as buying and selling of items online.
68. Electronic mail (E-mail):- Text messages and computer files are exchanged on the Internet with the help of email. Electronic mail (e-mail) is the electronic form of traditional postal mail. E-mail allows you to exchange messages and files over the network.
69) Firewall:- A filter that blocks untrusted information from the Internet before it reaches your computer or private network. It provides additional protection against threats like hackers and viruses. Firewall also helps in ensuring computer privacy by restricting external access by any unknown user.
70) Hacker:- A person who to gain unauthorized access to the computer. Uses specialized computer knowledge, and then misuses the programs and data stored on the computer.
71) Hyperlink:- An element in an electronic document that links to another location in the same document or in a different document.
72) Internet:- Internet is a worldwide collection of public networks that are linked to each other to exchange information.
73) Intellectual Property:- Any information available on the Internet is an intellectual property, which is legally owned by the person who created it. The owner of the Intellectual Property has exclusive rights to control the use of this information.
74) Internet Service Provider (ISP):-An ISP is a company that provides Internet access to individuals, businesses and organizations.
75) IP address:- An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a numerical address that specifies the exact location of a computer on the web.
76) Modem:- Modem is a connection device that allows you to connect your computer to the Internet. It converts analog information into digital information and trensmits it over a phone line.
77) Online communities:- Online communities are formed by groups of computer users who have common interests and communicate with each other over the Internet.
78) Online Predator:- A person who develops contacts with Internet users through chat rooms, online forums, or e-mails to financially exploit them or engage in dangerous relationships.
79) Password:- A unique string of characters that the user types as the identification code. It is a security measure used to restrict access to computer systems and sensitive files.
80) Phishing:- The act of extracting personal information from computer users, such as locating passwords and credit card details and then using the information for malicious purposes is called Phishing.
81) Plaglarism:- The act of copying and using someone's work as if it were your own work without mentioning the source.
82) Portal:- Portal is a website that provides information related to a specific table in the form of a directory. A portal serves as the starting point for many resources on the web.
83) Protocol:- Protocol is a standard way (or rule) to transfer date between different computers.
84) Search engine:- A search engine is a program that allows you to search and retrieve information on the Internet. It helps us to search the necessary information from the repository of unnecessary information like google, yahoo, Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yandex, AOL, Baidu, Ixquick, Lycos, Excite, Wolfram Alpha, Ecosia, Swisscows etc.
85) Software Piracy:- Software piracy is the use of unauthorized copying of copyrighted software without obtaining a license or with the permission of its copyright owner.
88) Spam:- An unsolicited e-mail message sent by an unknown sender. A spam is sent to deliver a message to multiple recipients at a time.
87) Spyware:- A computer program that is installed on your computer without your knowledge. Spyware may secretly send information about your web browsing habits or other personal details to another computer via the network.
88) Username:- The name by which the user is identified in a computer system or network. To access the computer protected by usemame and password, the user has to enter the correct combination of username and password.
89) Universal serial bus (USB) cable:-A cable that helps you connect a digital device (keyboard, mouse) to a computer without turning off the computer.
90) Virus:- A computer program that is designed to damage a computer or to damage the data stored on the computer.
91) Worm A computer program that propagates itself on the computer. A worm can duplicate itself in a computer so that the computer often crashes.
92) The Web:- The Web, also known as the World Wide Web (WWW), is a collection of information that is available on the Internet. The computer in which information is stored in logical form is called web server.
93) Web address:- A web address specifies the protocol for transferring data between different computers and the exact location of the web site. A web address is also called a Uniform Resource Locator (URL).
94) Web Browser:- A web browser is a program that enables you to view and interact with various resources on the web. If web browser is not installed in our computer then we cannot use internet on computer. Internet Explorer web browser is installed in computer along with window Example- google chrome, mozila firefox, safari, Netscape Navigator, opera mini, Microsoft edge , Konqueror, Lynx etc.
95) Web page:- A web page is a formatted text document on the web.
96) Web site:- A website is a collection of one or more web pages that are linked together and made available through a web server.
97) Home page:- Homepage is called a webpage which is the beginning or front page of a website.
98) Dot Pitch:- The total number of dots in a millimeter on a monitor is called dot pitch. It tells the quality of the monitor.
99) Gray code:- The instructions given to complete the input and output process is called gray code.
100) Kiosk:- It is a computer installed in public places. Through this, the user gets general information.
